Accrington Stanley chairman Andy Holt has stated on Twitter that he hopes that Leeds United finish in the top six of the Premier League.
Holt made the comments in response to remarks from Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa about League One and League Two in England.
Bielsa has called on the Premier League chiefs to help out clubs in the lower tiers amid economic problems.
The Daily Mail has quoted the Argentine as saying: “If anything describes English football, it is League One and League Two. It is the nucleus, the heart, the essence of football in this country.
“Football is a commercial thing, but if there is anything to distinguish English football, it is the spirit that you compete with. This spirit is no better represented than in these lower categories. This is a view of mine, perhaps I’m wrong. But it’s important not to forget the history of where you came from.”
Bielsa’s comments follow rejection of plans proposed by Liverpool and Manchester United, Project Big Picture, by the Premier League clubs, as reported by BBC Sport.
According to Sky Sports, EFL clubs have also rejected the Premier League’s offer of £50 million bailout to League One and League Two.
Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani has criticised Liverpool and United for their Project Big Picture proposal, as quoted in The Times.
Leeds United for top six?
Leeds have started the season strongly and drew with Manchester City before the international break.
The Whites also gave Liverpool a run for their money at Anfield, and it is clear that the club are not planning to just stave off relegation to the Championship.
However, it is hard to see Leeds break into the top six of the Premier League table this season, especially given the competition they will face from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.
