Donny van de Beek finally completed a loan move away from Manchester United, joining Everton until the summer. Edwin van der Sar reacted, suggesting it was United at fault for his game time – not the player himself.

Van de Beek, 24, has failed to nail down a place in Manchester United’s side since joining the club in the summer of 2020. The Netherlands ace has played 50 times in 18 months at United – but only started 19 matches.

In that season and a half, van de Beek managed a paltry four Premier League starts. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba preferred to the ex-Ajax man – to the frustration of supporters.

It has seen new Everton manager Frank Lampard swoop, with the ex-Chelsea boss deciding that creativity was an issue. Everton have signed van de Beek on loan, and Dele Alli from Tottenham. Van de Beek responded.

Van der Sar aims little dig at United as van de Beek joins Everton on loan

It is widely believed that while van de Beek did little coming off the bench, the ex-Ajax midfielder was not given the game time to shine at United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regularly overlooked him – ruining his confidence.

A lack of momentum, and a loss of confidence, has seen van de Beek look a shadow of the dominating player he was at Ajax. He needed a move to a side where he would play regularly and Everton is that, under Lampard.

Manchester United icon van der Sar aimed a small dig at his old club – with the ex-goalkeeper now Ajax’s chief executive. He suggested it was United, not the player, in his reply to van de Beek on Instagram.
