One huge figure at Liverpool looks set to leave next summer – and it isn’t a player.

It’s been reported in recent months that this will be Michael Edwards’s last season as Liverpool’s director of football.

And The Athletic on Thursday reiterated that there’s been no change on this front.

His contract expires in July and if true, Edwards will be determined to sign one or two more gems for Jurgen Klopp.

And signing off by adding Federico Chiesa would be a stunning parting gift for Liverpool.

According to La Repubblica, the Anfield outfit failed with an £86 million bid for the Italy international this past summer.

But Chiesa is looking like a minimum nine-figure player these days, having helped his country to Euro 2020 glory in July.

It’s expensive, but this is a player Liverpool do need – and by God he’d make Klopp’s side absolutely frightening.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane look on course for brilliant seasons on Merseyside, with the duo netting 14 goals between them so far – including one apiece in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

Thing is, they’re both turning 30 next year and how Edwards would love to leave the German coach with a long-term replacement for one of them.

Parting gift

We saw how devastating Chiesa is on Wednesday night when, from a Spain corner, he ran the length of the pitch, forcing the opposition into errors and then setting up the Azzurri’s consolation goal.

It’s that type of pressing which makes him an absolute dream signing for the Liverpool boss, who places a huge amount of emphasis on pressuring the ball.

Even though Salah and Mane are turning 30 in 2022, they still have some very good years left in the tank.

Add Chiesa to this attack and Liverpool would once again have one of the most frightening forward lines around.

All three wouldn’t play together, because they’re all wide players by trade, but Chiesa and Salah, for instance, is still a terrifying prospect if you’re a full-back coming up against Klopp’s side.

Lord knows that Edwards has gifted the Reds with a laundry list of stellar signings. His legacy is already impossible to tarnish, but adding the 23-year-old would be a hell of a way to end this chapter.
