Liverpool brought in two centre backs on deadline day, but were linked with so many, many more.
The Reds landed Ben Davies in a permanent move from Preston North End, before Ozan Kabak joined on loan from Schalke.
The duo should help Liverpool’s defensive depth, which has been a major issue with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all injured.
Davies is particularly appealing as a left-footed centre back, and Michael Edwards seemingly considered a deal for a much bigger name.
The Athletic claim that Liverpool looked into a deal for Samuel Umtiti, but he didn’t want to leave Barcelona before the deadline.
Umtiti is a World Cup winner with Barcelona and more of a household name than Davies, but this feels like a bullet dodged for the Reds.
The 27-year-old has only made five league appearances this season, and is far from the player he was given that injuries have taken their toll on him.

Since winning the World Cup in the summer of 2018, Umtiti has suffered five knee injuries, a foot injury, a calf injury, gastric problems and fallen victim to the global pandemic.
Transfermarkt note that these injuries have forced Umtiti to miss a staggering 63 games, which is the absolute last thing Liverpool need right now.
Signing an injury-prone centre back to solve Liverpool’s injury woes just doesn’t add up, and whilst he is a much bigger name than Davies, the Reds may have made a lucky escape.
