Liverpool supporters have taken to Twitter to lavish praise on a certain Taiwo Awoniyi.
The former Liverpool attacker started Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations opener against Egypt on Tuesday, helping the Super Eagles to a 1-0 victory.
Interestingly, Awoniyi also came up against Mohamed Salah and wound up enjoying a better evening than the Anfield superstar.
The Merseyside club sold Awoniyi to Union Berlin last summer in a £6.5 million agreement, where he’s been dazzling all season.
The 24-year-old has netted nine goals in 16 Bundesliga starts for the German outfit.
Here’s how Liverpool supporters reacted to his display against Salah yesterday:
Mistake?
Awoniyi was on Liverpool’s books since 2015 but repeated work permit issues made him ineligible to complete a competitive debut for the Premier League giants.
However, last summer he was given clearance to finally begin his career on Merseyside, only for Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards to offload him to Germany.
And considering what we’ve seen so far, yes Liverpool could potentially regret letting him go.
He is a physical threat that Klopp doesn’t really have in any other attacking option – not even Divock Origi – and therefore it was a gamble to transfer him.
Sixteen appearances and nine goals isn’t a monstrous ratio in German football, but he’s improving all the time and if Awoniyi helps Nigeria to AFCON success, well there’ll be a far larger spolight on Liverpool’s refusal to keep him.
