Arsenal have had their fair share of transfer shockers over the years, but in years to come, we may look back on their inability to land Jude Bellingham as the biggest error of the bunch.
Indeed, we’ve all heard the stories of the Gunners turning down the chance to sign Yaya Toure and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 2000s, but perhaps the most infamous missed opportunity was their failure to sign Kylian Mbappe as a teenager.
Indeed, the story goes that Arsene Wenger actually went to Mbappe’s house to speak to him about joining Arsenal on a free transfer when his Monaco contract expired, but for one reason or another, the Frenchman couldn’t convince him.
Mbappe has of course gone on to be an absolute superstar and Arsenal have been left to rue their failure.
As much as we all love Arsene Wenger, we have to admit that failing to sign Mbappe was a mistake, and sadly, it looks as though Edu may have already made a similar error with Jude Bellingham.
Indeed, according to Charles Watts, Arsenal tried to sign Bellingham on two occasions when he was at Birmingham City, but as with Mbappe, the Gunners failed to get the deal over the line.
Is Bellingham as good as Mbappe? Of course he’s not, but at the age of just 17, he has so much room to improve and he’s already a star in one of the best teams in Europe at Borussia Dortmund.
The Gunners have had so many stories of near-misses in terms of transfers under Arsene Wenger, and sadly, it seems as though that trend hasn’t been bucked under Edu.
It’s sad to say it, but Wenger’s Mbappe error has been repeated by Edu with Bellingham.
