Arsenal are top of the Premier League right now, and they’re flying so high due to a long list of correct decisions from the higher-ups at the club.
Indeed, Arsenal have come under scrutiny for many of their decisions in recent years, whether that’s backing Mikel Arteta when they were bottom of the league, spending big money on two-time relegated goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale or releasing their star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but each and every time, their decisions have been proven correct.
Of course, most of these big calls have been made by the Gunners’ Sporting Director, Edu, and given his track record, you’d think it’s impossible to question any decision he makes.
However, there is one alarming report doing the rounds at the moment that would indicate that Edu is about to make his most baffling decision yet at Arsenal.
Indeed, it’s being reported in Italy by CMW that Edu is lining up a part-exchange deal that would see Thomas Partey swapped with AC Milan’s Ismael Bennacer.
Now, this is worrying for a number of reasons.
For a start, Bennacer wouldn’t be a suitable Partey replacement. Yes, he’s a talented player, but he is much more in the Granit Xhaka role as a player who thrives on the ball and works his way forward through tight spaces rather than being an off-the-ball, intense presence like the Ghanaian.
Partey’s ability to break up play, harry opposition players and recycle posession is really what makes Arsenal tick, and they can’t afford to lose that.
Bennacer just wouldn’t fill the gap left behind by Partey, and to make matters even worse, this is a player that Arsenal have already had and lost.
The Algerian was a part of the Gunners’ academy at one point, and while letting him go already looks like a mistake, it will look like an even bigger error if Partey is sacrificed to bring him back.
If this rumour is true, Edu could be about to make his most baffling decision at Arsenal.
