Financial struggles make Aston Villa’s big-money Aaron Tshibola fee even more baffling

Aston Villa are in desperate need of funds to reinvest in their squad – but so far Aaron Tshibola has gone nowhere.

Hindsight does not reflect well on Aston Villa’s decision to splash out £5 million on Reading midfielder Aaron Tshibola last summer, as reported by The Express.

Because, while fellow big-money additions Ross McCormack and Tommy Elphick hardly set the world alight, the tenacious enforcer was surely one of the most disappointing signings in the entirety of the Championship last season.

Aston Villa's Aaron Tshibola celebrates scoring their first goalPositive moments have been few and far between for Aaron Tshibola at Aston Villa

Not only did the 22-year-old struggle to make an impression at Villa Park, featuring just three times in the league after Steve Bruce took over in October, he also failed miserably during a loan spell at Nottingham Forest in the second half of the campaign.

Four league appearances amounted to a grand total of 202 minutes of action – almost half of which came in a 5-1 debut battering at Norwich City.

As of yet, however, it appears that Villa are no nearer to finding a buyer willing to take Tshibola off their hands.

And, according to the Birmingham Mail, they are unlikely to recoup anything like the £5 million they paid to secure his services last summer. And with Financial Fair Play restrictions preventing Villa from bringing new players until others are sold, his 2016 addition looks even more questionable.

Unless they let him go for peanuts, it appears that Tshibola will be nothing more than a drain on the club’s resources with Bruce clearly feeling he has little to offer.
