The NBA GOAT debate is always one of the more entertaining conversations in basketball.
Most NBA fans and media members have narrowed down that debate to two players: Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
However, former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy caught a lot of attention when he said that Nikola Jokic might be the best player in the history of the NBA.
Jokic has dominated the decade so far as he has won three NBA MVPs to go along with one NBA title and one NBA Finals MVP.
Eddie Johnson says the ‘goal posts’ for the GOAT debate keep changing
Former NBA player Eddie Johnson called out Van Gundy after he said Jokic might be the GOAT on The Zach Lowe Show.
Van Gundy claimed that NBA players in this era are far better than the players that used to play in the league.
He even went as far as saying that he doesn’t think certain players in the top-75 of all-time with multiple championships would even be considered great players today.
After that take, Johnson went at Van Gundy on X.
“So now great players who won multiple titles does not matter, I wish people would make up their mind.
“Is it stats or winning. The goal posts keep moving based on agenda.”
NBA Championships should matter in the GOAT debate
Johnson makes a good point about it not being right to discredit players just because of the era they played in.
When looking at the GOAT debate it should be based on that player’s individual stats and championships.
It’s why Jordan should have the edge over James. Jordan won 6 championships in 6 appearances. That should carry a lot more weight when comparing it to James’ 4 championships in 10 appearances.
For as good as Jokic is, he first needs to win more championships before he is considered in that same discussion.
