Eddie Howe has raved about Newcastle star Joelinton in his latest press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash against West Ham. The Brazilian has been re-moulded into a central midfielder under the guidance of Howe.
Joelinton, 25, has arguably been the most-improved player of Howe’s brief reign, going from an out-of-form forward that was the subject of huge criticism. Largely due, to the enormous £40million fee paid for his services.
Howe has used £87k-a-week (Spotrac) Joelinton as a midfield three of late alongside Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock; it is working. The ex-Hoffenheim ace has been pivotal in three wins over Leeds, Everton and Villa.
Joelinton is expected to start – which will be his 13th start of 14 games under Howe. The Toon manager has spoke about the Brazilian, mentioning his stats and that there are “exciting” times ahead for Joelinton.
“His number of regains from second balls, ability to recover long distances, tackling and actually intercepting the ball is of the highest level. I can’t praise him enough…there’s exciting times ahead for him in that position.”
Howe on Joelinton: Newcastle star the driving force behind Toon wins
Kieran Trippier has scored two wonderful free-kicks and is already a leader. Shelvey’s passing is incredible. Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn have been superb in the middle of the defence.
Allan Saint-Maximin is his normal, enigmatic self. Willock has improved under Howe, as has Ryan Fraser. But Joelinton has improved enormously, his work rate is incredible. He is the driving force behind the recent form.
