Highly-rated teenager Lewis Miley has a ‘chance’ to be involved during Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup third-round clash at home to Premier League champions Manchester City on Wednesday.

The emergence of Elliot Anderson as a regular first-team player is proof that, just because Newcastle United have more money than God himself these days, Eddie Howe will not forget the club’s roots.

Anderson, Whitley Bay-born and a member of the Magpies’ academy since he was just eight years old, grabbed only his second Premier League assist in Sunday’s shellacking of Sheffield United.

And the elegant midfielder is an example for Lewis Miley to follow; another local lad with an opportunity to stake his claim potentially on the cards against Manchester City.

Lewis Miley could feature for Newcastle vs Man City

“There’s a chance,” Howe tells The Chronicle when asked about the prospect of Miley earning a place in the squad.

“As I say, I haven’t got all the information I need before picking my squad yet. (But Miley is) someone who’s done really well.”

17-year-old Miley made his senior debut in May. Becoming the youngest player to ever feature in the Premier League for Newcastle United in the process.

The England U19 international was arguably the biggest story to come out of the club’s pre-season tour of the USA too, outshining £106 million World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez in one clash against Chelsea.

‘He will get minutes’

“I haven’t come across many 17-year-olds at his level,” Howe said at the time (Daily Mail). “He’s not surprised me because I’d seen it for six months at the back end of last season, just how well he was developing and how strong he looked in the group.

“The plan for him has been consistent in my mind. There are no thoughts about sending him on loan. He’s too young to be exposed to that at the moment.

“He needs to stay with his family and learn and develop around the players we have. Physically, it’s always the biggest test for someone so young, but he is a very good athlete. Strong. A good size. He looks like he can handle the environment he’s in. The next step for us is to push him. I’m sure he’ll get minutes this year.”
