Eddie Howe has applauded Newcastle United’s owners on the club’s website for getting a deal done for Swedish striker Alexander Isak – in a deal that completed smashes the Toon’s previous transfer record, costing £59million.

Isak, 22, has joined Newcastle on a long-term contract that Fabrizio Romano reports is a deal worth £59million. Of that figure, £55million will be paid up front to Real Sociedad and another £4million in add-ons. He will wear no.14.

He becomes the Toon’s fourth signing of the summer. It comes after a permanent deal for left-back Matty Targett, who spent the second half of last season on loan from Aston Villa. Sven Botman and Nick Pope have also joined.

It takes the Toon’s summer spending to around £120million for the four additions – after the best part of £100million in January. Howe thanked the club’s owners for the signing of Isak, underlining his appreciation.

“He is technically very good, with a mix of attributes that will complement us. But he is also at a great age to grow. I want to thank the club’s owners and transfer committee for bringing Alexander to Newcastle. We are all delighted.”

What a signing Isak is. A brilliant addition to the Newcastle’s side right now, in the short term, but also for the long-term vision of the club. Newcastle will have looked at Manchester City’s model when their owners came in.

They tried to sign the best players in a mediocre side. Newcastle have realised they need to build slowly, adding one or two big players that can take the club forward long-term every window. Botman and Isak are examples.

In January, they brought in Bruno Guimaraes and a handful of players that improved the club in the short term. The model is improving Newcastle at the right pace, without going crazy. £220million in two windows is a lot, though.
