Eddie Gray was impressed by Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson on Saturday.

Eddie Gray has told LUTV that Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson was “terrific” in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Norwich City.

The 27-year-old centre-back was Leeds’ hero at both ends yesterday after scoring what turned out to be the winner on 41 minutes, whilst managing a Herculean defensive effort to help the Whites hang on their narrow lead.

Jansson, a £3.6 million permanent signing in the summer (figure reported by The Express), has not always looked as exceptional as he was on loan last season, but Saturday’s performance was a reminder of his undoubted quality.

And Gray could not speak highly enough about the Swedish defender at full time.

He told LUTV: “The defenders recently have been playing very well. They are playing with a lot of confidence and I must say I thought Pontus Jansson was terrific today.”

Leeds fans must be delighted to see Jansson and Liam Cooper forming such a brilliant partnership at the heart of the Whites’ defence.

Last season it was Jansson and Kyle Bartley, who returned to Swansea, but captain Cooper has really stepped up to the plate this season and for that he deserves enormous credit.

United have shipped 26 goals this season, which is far higher than it looked like being earlier in the campaign when Jansson and Cooper kept six successive clean sheets, but a horrific run of six defeats in seven games from late September to early November, encompassing 14 conceded goals, ruined their defensive record.
