Leeds United have made a brilliant start to the season in the Championship.

Leeds Manager Eddie Gray looks dejected during the FA Barclaycard Premiership match between Arsenal and Leeds United at Highbury on April 16, 2004 in London.

Eddie Gray has told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (broadcast on 12th September 2017; 9:53 am) that the current Leeds side is undoubtedly one of the club’s best since their relegation from the Premier League in 2004.

Thomas Christiansen’s side have made a fantastic start to the new season, going into Tuesday’s clash with Birmingham City still unbeaten and second in the Championship with four wins and two draws to begin the campaign.

That has left supporters extremely optimistic about what the current team can achieve – especially with everything off the pitch looking a lot more settled – and when Gray was asked about whether this current team was the Whites’ best since they went down from the top flight 13 years ago, he suggested that there was certainly plenty to be positive about.

“I think it’s one of the best sides we’ve had from the point of view that they’re difficult to score against, the back four are playing very, very well. The midfield players can get up and down the pitch and we’ve got players within the forwards and wide players that can turn games,” he told The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT.

“They’ve got that little bit of quality, that little bit of talent that makes a difference, and the good thing for us is last year, we were relying solely on Chris Wood for the majority of the goals. You’ve got four different goalscorers on Saturday against Burton, the midfield players are chipping in with goals so that’s good. That’s the one thing we were lacking I feel.”

Of course, there is a long way to go before the genuine front-runners and promotion contenders establish themselves in the second tier, but the early signs are extremely positive.

Given the number of changes at Elland Road over the summer, Leeds would have been forgiven for needing some time to find their feet and get through this transitional period.

But with the club thriving already, it is surely fair to say that they are in with a great chance of establishing themselves as the best Leeds team since 2004, and perhaps even the team that could end their wait to get back to England’s top table.
