Rangers confirmed on their official website earlier today that manager Mark Warburton and his assistant David Weir have signed new one-year deals at Ibrox.
The Gers enjoyed a superb season under Warburton last season, winning the Scottish Championship title at a canter, clinching the Petrofac Training Cup and even reaching the Scottish Cup final after beating Old Firm rivals Celtic at Hampden Park.
Former Brentford boss Warburton is now charged with the task of eventually making Rangers a title challenger, with a Scottish Premiership campaign on the horizon.
After making a host of new signings this summer – including Clint Hill, Joey Barton, Jordan Rossiter and Niko Kranjcar – Warburton’s squad looks strong, but questions have been hovering over the Rangers boss and his long-term future at Ibrox.
With Warburton’s exploits no doubt turning heads in England, Rangers had been hoping to tie their manager down to a new contract at Ibrox, but a delay in talks led some fans to worry about Warburton leaving the club this summer.
However, today, Rangers confirmed that Warburton and his assistant David Weir have penned new one-year contract extensions to stay at Ibrox until 2019.
Since Rangers announced the deal, fans have been taking to Twitter to give their views – and the consensus was that, even after landing former Premier League stars Barton and Kranjcar, Warburton’s new deal is the true signing of the summer for Rangers.
Others now called for a new striker to be signed or James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn to receive new contracts too, but ultimately think Warburton’s new deal is well-deserved.
