Rio Ferdinand says Newcastle United fans are in his ‘top five’ supporters as they make a return to the Champions League this forthcoming season.

The Manchester United legend pointed out that the St James’ Park faithful ‘love their club’ and they have ‘waited a long time’ for their team to make a return to Europe’s elite, as he told TNT Sports.

When the Saudis took charge of Newcastle, the end goal was to be in the Champions League and to also win trophies.

But not many thought that they would get back on the Champions League road as quickly as they have done.

A lot of credit goes to Eddie Howe for the outstanding job he has done because they more than deserved their top-four finish last time out.

Ferdinand is going to be pitch side as Newcastle return to the big time and he spoke in a glowing manner about the club’s supporters.

“When people say to me ‘what’s the best stadium you have been to for fans?’ Newcastle will be in my top four or five, easy,” said Ferdinand.

“I remember when we were beating them 6-2 or 6-1, I think it was, and their fans were there, full house, no one leaving, screaming.

“They love their club. They are a great fanbase. They have waited a long time for this (Champions League) as well. Every single second counts for them.”

Newcastle to cause problems in the Champions League

No matter who Newcastle get drawn against in the Champions League, you can bet your bottom dollar that they are going to find life tough at St James’ Park.

Those fans will drive that ball into the back of the net themselves, but their home form may well allow them to reach the knockout stages.

And if they do that, then anything can happen.
