Sol Bamba believes that it is an ‘easy decision’ for Liverpool to hand Dejan Lovren a new contract, as he told Sky Sports News (15/07/20 at 11:25 am).
Sky Sports recently reported that Liverpool are planning to extend Lovren’s current deal which will keep him at Anfield until 2022 – he joined the Reds for £20 million in 2014 from Southampton [BBC Sport].
Lovren’s current deal is due to expire in 12 months, but it’s stated that the Premier League champions will take up an option to extend his stay even further.
Cardiff City defender, Bamba, who came up against Liverpool last season, thinks that the club are making the right call and it’s a ‘good bit of business’.
“Yes, because they know why he’s good and what he’s bringing to the team,” Bamba told Sky Sports. “I think we don’t see what’s happening behind the scenes. If you are not a team player then you won’t play in that Liverpool side.
“I think Jurgen Klopp is looking massively on the attitude of the players. If you are bringing new players in then you don’t know how he is going to perform. You need time to bed in. You don’t know how he is going to gel with the rest of the squad.
“So, I think it is an easy decision if you like because he’s a good player and he has proved that at this level – clearly, Jurgen Klopp thinks he’s good enough and, for me, it’s a good bit of business.”
It’s fair to say that Lovren divides opinion amongst fans, and due to his error-prone ways, he has his critics.
Lovren isn’t a regular in Liverpool’s backline with Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk the main two men at the heart of their defence.
It could then be argued that Joel Matip is next in line, as he tends to swap with Gomez on a number of occasions and partner Van Dijk at the back.
