The Miami Heat’s pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo may hinge on getting an Eastern Conference contender involved in a deal the Milwaukee Bucks are willing to accept.
The Heat have been linked with Giannis for weeks.
Detroit could now help the deal take shape.
Detroit Pistons could become key in Giannis Antetokounmpo trade talks
According to Marc Stein, “The Pistons, I’m told, should be monitored as a potential third-team facilitator in a Giannis Antetokounmpo-to-Miami trade … with Tyler Herro ultimately landing in Detroit.”
That is the kind of move Miami may need. The Heat have been seen as frontrunners, with Giannis reportedly interested in South Florida, and Stein noted that Miami remains at the top of his list, even with Boston still in the mix.
Milwaukee has not viewed Miami’s offer as strong enough to end the conversation. Reports have framed the Heat’s proposal around Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., the No. 13 pick, and future draft capital, but the Bucks are still looking for a better fit for their rebuild.
Detroit does not need Giannis for this to make sense. The Pistons need shooting, playmaking, and another scorer to slot alongside Cade Cunningham, especially after a postseason that exposed their half-court struggles.
Herro averaged 20.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 31.3 minutes across 33 games last season, shooting 48 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from beyond the arc. For Detroit, that directly answers a clear weakness.
Giannis Antetokounmpo race puts the Heat under draft pressure

Detroit’s offense faltered at the wrong time. The Ringer reported during the first round that the Pistons ranked 16th among playoff teams in offensive rating, produced 17 fewer points per 100 possessions than in the regular season, and ranked last in three-point production and percentage.
Herro would not fix everything, but he would give Detroit a movement shooter, secondary ball handler, and late clock scorer. His salary could also be easier for Milwaukee to redirect if the Bucks prefer picks, younger frontcourt talent, or cleaner rebuilding pieces.
Miami will hope more teams get involved to help boost the return for Milwaukee. A three-team setup could send Giannis to the Heat, Herro to Detroit, and a more flexible asset package to the Bucks.
The timing is crucial. The NBA Draft is looming, and Milwaukee will want clarity before it makes or trades picks. Miami cannot afford to let Boston hang around with a potential Jaylen Brown offer. Detroit has its own timeline around Cunningham to consider.
If Detroit gets involved as expected, it could be the piece that finally helps Miami move from frontrunner to finish line.
