Scottish Premiership giants Rangers need to clear out some deadwood this summer.

Expect big changes at Rangers this summer. Graeme Murty and director of football Mark Allen have a lot of deadwood to shift out of Ibrox after the haphazard recruitment that contributed so heavily to Pedro Caixinha’s demise.

But who could be the first out the door?

Jordan Rossiter

No prizes for guessing the first name on this list. Rossiter looked like an excellent signing when Rangers plucked him from Liverpool in the summer of 2016 but, in almost two years, injuries have restricted him to just five league appearances.

Wigan Athletic were keen in January, according to the Daily Record, but Rangers were keen to give the former Liverpool U19 captain time to prove himself.

Since, then, Rossiter has still not featured and, with plenty of other midfielders on Rangers’ books, it seems his time may be running out.

Jason Holt

As of yet, there have been no suggestions that Rangers could sell Holt at the end of this season, but the former Hearts enforcer should be feeling the heat with Graham Dorrans and Ryan Jack set to return from injury and Greg Docherty impressing following his January move from Hamilton.

Erik Sviatchenko of Celtic vies with Jason Holt of Rangers during the Rangers v Celtic Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox Stadium on December 31, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Holt hasn’t started a league game since the 2-0 win away at Partick Thistle on February 6th and, though his chances will be boosted when loanee Sean Goss returns to QPR in the summer, the 25-year-old should be worried that he has started to fall down the pecking order.

That will only continue when Jack and Dorrans return.

David Bates

The fact that centre-back Bates is out of contract in three months is well documented, but despite expressing a desire to remain at Ibrox, the Scottish Sun reports that negotiations seem to have stalled over a new deal.

And now suggestions that he could miss over a month with injury has raised fears that the former Ross County prospect has played his last game for the club.

But, in truth, Bates could hardly have done more to stake his claim for a new contract. He was Rangers’ best defender before the injury struck and surely Bruno Alves, Russell Martin and Fabio Cardoso should be out the door first.
