With the end of the season approaching rapidly, thoughts being to turn to the transfer window. Who should Celtic consider trying to sign from England’s top flight?
Under Brendan Rodgers, Celtic have done a better job than usual in terms of signing talented footballers from the English leagues.
Back in the early 2000s, it was common place for the Hoops to bring big names still in their prime north of the border, with the likes of Chris Sutton, John Hartson, Neil Lennon and Alan Thompson all joining the club at a similar time to enjoy some trophy laden years at Celtic Park.
Since then, the financial power of Celtic compared to the English clubs has changed dramatically, with the Scottish Champions’ ability to attract big names growing less and less. However, with Rodgers at the helm, the club has regained some of its ability to sign English league stars, and with the summer transfer window approaching rapidly, here are three players who present themselves as a realistic capture for the Bhoys.
Jesus Gamez, RB, Newcastle United
Jesus Gamez joined Newcastle United from Atletico Madrid in 2016, but has been a rare feature for Rafa Benitez’s side over the last couple of seasons. At 32, the former Spanish under-23 international is nearing the end of his career, but still has plenty of football left in him should he wish to continue playing.
The ex-Malaga star has played only a handful of games for the Magpies since their promotion to the top flight, with USA international DeAndre Yedlin, a club stalwart, above the Spaniard in the pecking order for right-back.
The 32-year-old would present both a realistic and affordable option for Celtic should they attempt to sign him, as they step up their attempts to replace the out of form Mikael Lustig.
Kieran Gibbs, LB, West Bromwich Albion
It has not yet been confirmed, but West Brom look near certain to face the drop this season, and former Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs will be no doubt eyeing a move away from the Hawthorns once their fate is sealed. At 28, Gibbs should be in the prime of his career, and the England international is most definitely above the standard he is currently playing at.
Like any relegated team, the Baggies will likely go through a mass exodus of players, with clubs swooping to pick up their stars on the cheap before the club turn their attention to next season’s Championship campaign. Gibbs will probably be set on a move back to the top flight, however, should Celtic come calling, the chance to work alongside Brendan Rodgers and challenge himself against the likes of Kieran Tierney, one of Europe’s finest defensive talents, may be enticing enough to consider.
Jermain Defoe, ST, Bournemouth
Bournemouth veteran Jermain Defoe has well and truly been around the block throughout his wonderful career. The 35-year-old has nearly 300 career goals to his name and has played for some of England’s biggest clubs in West Ham and Tottenham, but despite nearly two decades in professional football, Defoe closest chance of a ‘trophy’ came when his Portsmouth side finished runners up in the Community Shield back in 2008.
With Moussa Dembele very likely to move on from the Hoops in the summer, the club will likely exercise the option to purchase Odsonne Eduoard on a permanent deal, but will additionally want to bring in further striker. Defore’s experience and goal record speaks for itself, and having not played as much as he would have probably liked under Eddie Howe, would probably be keen on a move.
At 35, Defoe will not have too many more chances to win a trophy, especially playing for Bournemouth, and lifting silverware as a Celt would be the perfect end to what has been a terrific career for the 57-capped England international.
