Much was expected of Barrie McKay at Nottingham Forest when he joined from Rangers in the summer of 2017 for a transfer fee reported by STV to be worth £500,000.

The 23-year-old Scotland international winger was a regular at Rangers, and given his undeniable quality and experience for playing one of the biggest clubs in the world, the youngster was expected to do great things at Forest.

McKay’s time at the City Ground, though, has not gone exactly according to plan. Although the winger has scored five goals and provided seven assists in 22 Championship starts for Forest, he has featured in just one league fixture for the Reds since January 30.

Mark Warburton may have rated the former Rangers winger highly, but his successor at Forest, Aitor Karanka, needs convincing.

McKay, who has been inconsistent this season and has often gone missing during matches, needs to make a decision on his future in the summer transfer window.

While leaving Forest on a permanent contract may not be a great idea as the Reds could go places under Karanka, the 23-year-old Scotland international should certainly consider moving to another club on loan for the first half of next season and play regular competitive football.
