Sunderland boss David Moyes has tracked him since his Everton days, but couldn’t lure Stoke City’s Charlie Adam to Wearside in January.
But with his contract expiring this summer, could a move to the Stadium of Light be back on, irrespective of Sunderland’s league status?

How is he getting on?
Having began the campaign on the bench, Adam went on to appear in 16 of Stoke’s 17 Premier League fixtures between the end of October until late February. However, last Tuesday’s start against Burnley was his first for five matches. The former Scotland international has scored one goal and assisted four so far.
Do Sunderland still need him?
The Mackems turned to Darron Gibson at the end of the January window, but have central midfield trio Jan Kirchhoff, Jason Denayer and Sebastian Larsson out of contract this summer, with another – Jack Rodwell – being tipped to move on. David Moyes will almost certainly be looking at new recruits in Adam’s position this summer – assuming he remains in charge at the Stadium of Light.
Can they get him?
Though Adam’s deal is up, Stoke do have an option to extend it by a further 12 months should they wish to, and it is unclear whether or not the 31-year-old will have any say in the matter. Reports claim the Potters are keen to reduce the average age of their squad, however, and getting rid of Adam would help them to achieve that. Though, whether or not he’d drop to the Championship remains to be seen.
Verdict: 6/10 – the interest will surely resurface, but Sunderland’s finances, combined with Adam’s own ambition, could be deciding factors – if, of course, Stoke fail to renew his contract.
