After 92 minutes of relentless pressure, the 18-year-old striker finally broke the deadlock to snatch a deserved point from Mike Phelan’s Hull.

Captain Wayne Rooney – who came in for criticism from fans for his overall performance – snaked his way past Ahmed Elmohamady on the byline before putting in a pinpoint cross through the legs of Jake Livermore.

Rashford, who had only made his way on to the field in the 71st minute, made an incisive run and managed to poke the ball in from all of three feet, causing wild celebrations among the United fans and causing himself to be shown a yellow card.

United were turgid for large parts of the game, and although Ibrahimovic and Rooney had come close, it was not until he introduction of Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan that a sense of cutting edge appeared.

The stats tell a story of complete and utter annihilation. United enjoyed 62% possession and had an astronomical 29 shots on goal of which nine were on target.

It may well be testament to their status as possible champions that they seemed so impotent and slow for so long, but have come away with the three points.

Fans took to social media after the game to comment on the performance of wonderkid Rashford, whilst many focused on the impact of new signings as well as the improved displays of some of LVG’s recruits.

Pundits had their say on the performance, with one predicting before the goal that Rashford really is the real deal, and another discussing the Rooney conundrum.

After the international break, United have the Manchester derby waiting for them in Saturday’s early kick-off on 10 September. Odds on Rashford to seal the win?
