Dwight Yorke has contacted Sunderland about the club’s vacant manager’s position.
Yorke finished his career at Sunderland, spending three years at the Stadium of Light between 2006 and 2009.
The 46-year-old has since spent time as assistant manager of his native Trinidad & Tobago, but is yet to land a number one role of his own.
Nevertheless, Yorke still believes he has something to offer Sunderland, who sacked Simon Grayson two weeks ago.
When asked if he was putting his name in the Stadium of Light frame, Yorke told Talksport on Tuesday (11:17): “Well I am, I’ve tried to get hold of [chief executive] Martin Bain and I’ve left a message or two to see if there’s any comeback.
“I think at this time that place needs a bit of uplift – something new, something exciting. I know they’ve gone for experience in the past, they’ve tried all that, that hasn’t quite worked out. Why not give somebody new, who’s really eager to prove to everybody that he can do a good job there?
“That’s all it is. An interview would be nice – I’m not even getting that – but I’ll still continue to work on it and see where we get.”
Former Sunderland players Ally McCoist and Paul Heckingbottom are the latest to be linked with Grayson’s old job.
McCoist knows Bain from his time at Rangers, whom he led to back-to-back promotions between 2012 and 2014, but has remained out of work since leaving Ibrox the following year.
Heckingbottom, on the other hand, is currently in charge of Sunderland’s Championship rivals, Barnsley.
The 40-year-old has held the position for less than two years, but has already won one promotion and a Football League Trophy as well as having established the Reds as a Championship side once more.
