Dwight Yorke has told Goal that Tottenham Hotspur’s rumoured summer transfer target, Anthony Martial, must ‘buckle down’ if the forward sees his future at Manchester United.

Martial has struggled to establish a key role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans at Old Trafford so far this term. The Frenchman has only started two and featured as a substitute in three of the Red Devils’ Premier League fixtures.

He has also only played one minute in the Champions League as a late change in defeat to Young Boys. But the 25-year-old scored his first goal of the campaign in any competition at home to Everton on Saturday. Breaking the deadlock before Andros Townsend’s equaliser.

Martial had faced an uncertain future at Manchester United this summer, with Tottenham a keen observer, per the Daily Star. The Red Devils considered selling the winger for £50m, but Spurs had difficulties matching his £250k-a-week wage demands.

Yorke now urges Martial to buckle down and deliver consistent performances if the winger sees his future at Manchester United. As he cannot have any blips to stay at Old Trafford.

“When you play for this club and you’re not doing the business and your form dips for whatever reason, you’re going to be under scrutiny. He’s got to buckle down really if he has a future at this football club,” Yorke said.

“He’s undoubtedly got immense talent and all the attributes we like to see in an attacking player, and there’s no question he can be that vital player for us. But at the moment, he’s not in the squad and he’s got to find a way to get back into the team.”

Should Tottenham revisit transfer interest in Manchester United’s Martial?

Tottenham sounded out Martial’s situation at Manchester United this summer but did not advance their transfer interest, per The Sun. That may have been due to Harry Kane staying in north London, as the Daily Mail suggested the Frenchman was a potential replacement.

Spurs could look to pair Kane with Martial this winter if the forward’s situation does not improve at Old Trafford. Eurosport reported in late September that Manchester United have given Martial’s agent permission to seek a mid-season transfer.

Martial is additionally open to staying in the Premier League, but fears a £40m valuation will price him out. While his wage would once again be a sticking point, should Tottenham return or a new suitor emerge for Martial.
