Aston Villa recently appointed Steve Bruce as their manager.
Dwight Yorke, speaking exclusively to 888sport, has stated that the Aston Villa players need to change their mentality.
Villa are playing in the Championship this season after getting relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
The Villans are not doing so well and are in danger of getting relegated to League One.
Villa are 19th in the league table at the moment with 10 points from 11 matches, just two points above the bottom three.
Steve Bruce has been appointed the Villa manager following the recent dismissal of Roberto Di Matteo.
Former Villa forward Yorke has given his thoughts on the current situation at Villa Park, and has also commented on club owner Tony Xia.
“I’ve tried to get in there and one of the things I’d have brought to the table is the fact that I’ve played in that league and won the competition under Roy Keane as a player,” said Dwight Yorke, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“The mentality of the club is really something to be questioned from top to bottom. Most of the players who have come out of the Premier League won’t know the players they are coming up against.
“That’s something I had to do at the age of 37 when I went to Sunderland in the Championship. It’s your duty as players to at least know the strengths and weaknesses of players you are going to come up against.
“I bet 100% if you asked Villa players who they’re playing against they wouldn’t have a clue. It’s a Premier League mentality where they expect everybody to know who they are but they’re not bothered about who they are back.
“There is no studying so straight away the mentality is all-wrong. They have to cover all these steps if they want to go the distance and teams will come to Villa Park and it’s the FA Cup for them.
“Why are Newcastle and Norwich regarded as favourites for promotion and not Aston Villa? Because of the mentality of everyone at the club. “It’s a difficult league” – we know it’s a difficult league but it doesn’t mean I want my players to think it’s a league we can’t get out of. It’s a joke and I’m disappointed with them.
“The new owner seems lively but you need someone with passion who know the club who people can relate to, someone who can get the players running and playing as they should do.
“I’m just miffed because everyone still thinks you need managerial experience but we’re in the 21st century and players are getting out far more educated and far more wise but no-one wants to give you an opportunity.
“From Steve Bruce’s perspective obviously he has that experience but if things go belly-up his years with Birmingham City will be challenged. His record though in the Championship is good so if he gets the job that would be a good call. But for me they need someone with new ideas and new aspirations who can drive the team forward and not that stagnant last five years.
“You get these managers who get umpteen chances then they are sacked and walk into another job. There are people who have taken all the badges but that opportunity is denied us. So they have gone with Steve Bruce again and that’s fine but things need to be different.”
Villa will return to action on Saturday evening when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Villa Park in the Championship.
The Villans will head into the match against Wolves on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Preston North End away from home at Deepdale.
Wolves currently find themselves 12th in the Championship table at the moment with 15 points from 11 games, five points behind sixth-placed Birmingham City.
