Newcastle United are on the look out for a new striker this month, as Rafael Benitez looks to improve his forward line.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United have submitted a record breaking bid for a new striker, and that should be worrying news for Dwight Gayle.

Gayle was Newcastle’s top scorer last season in the Championship, but he has struggled to hit the back of the net as prolifically at the top level.

The Magpies front man has just three goals to his name in 21 appearances this season, and he could be about to slip further down the pecking order, if a new expensive front man arrives.

Joselu appears to be ahead of Gayle in Benitez’s selection order right now, as the Spanish forward has started six of Newcastle’s last eight matches.

And if a new forward arrives at St. James’ Park before Gayle gets another chance, it could be a long way back for the 27-year-old.

Gayle has already been linked with an exit from Tyneside, and if Newcastle’s record signing arrives soon, that could be the writing on the wall for the former Crystal Palace man.
