Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has told the Chronicle that their defence was key to the win over Bristol City.
The Magpies secured their second win of the season on Saturday as they beat Lee Johnson’s side 1-0 at Ashton Gate.
Gayle was the man who proved to be the difference, netting the only goal of the game on 19 minutes to take his goal tally for the season to four so far.

But while it was his strike that secured all three points for Rafa Benitez’s side, Gayle insists that it was the defence who were key to the victory.
“It’s fantastic to help the team – everyone’s chipping in,” he told the Chronicle.
“The defence were the reason we got the three points. I thank them for that, and we all go back together on the plane and go again on Tuesday.”

Newcastle will now be hoping that their defence can continue to impress like this throughout the rest of the season.
This year in the Championship looks likely to be one of the most competitive to date, with a number of teams all fighting it out for promotion.
