Newcastle United proved they can win without their top scorer.
Newcastle United’s Ayoze Perez celebrates scoring their second goal
Newcastle United came from behind to record a dramatic win over Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Toon were trailing for most of the game after a controversial first half penalty decision, before Mohamed Diame netted one of the flukiest goals of the season so far to equalise late on.
Newcastle quickly went and grabbed a late winner through Ayoze Perez, sealing a 2-1 victory to leapfrog their title rivals.
The most impressive element of Newcastle’s win was that it came without injured striker Dwight Gayle.
Gayle himself was ecstatic with the dramatic win, and took to Twitter after the game.
Gayle is Newcastle’s top scorer this season with 20 league goals and it was important for the team to record such a momentous win without him.
Newcastle have moved into first place as a result of Ayoze Perez’s late strike, and will take huge confidence into their upcoming away fixtures.
They face third placed Huddersfield this weekend before a trip to fifth placed Reading next week. They have got off to the best possible start.
