The Newcastle United striker has 16 goals to his name this season.
Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has told the Chronicle he will be happy if he can beat 20 goals this season.
The forward joined Newcastle in the summer transfer window as manager Rafa Benitez looked to add more firepower to his team.
Gayle has done just that, with 16 goals to his name in all competitions so far this season.
He was in fine form again over the weekend, bagging a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Birmingham City.
That helped his side move back to the top of the table and he says helping the team is his main aim, above a personal goal target.
“I don’t really believe in targets because if you fall short you’ll be upset,” Gayle told the Chronicle.
“The main thing really is to go into each game looking to score and just hoping to help the team.
“The most I’ve got in a season was probably 20 combined in the Football League, seven at Dagenham, 13 at Peterborough. I’ll be happy if I beat that.”
While Gayle may not be setting any individual targets for the season, Newcastle will certainly be hoping he is eyeing adding a few more to his tally before the end of the season.
His goals have been key so far, helping them to the top of the Championship table and a point ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion.
Chris Hughton’s side are looking to be strong contenders and the Magpies will need Gayle to stay among the goal to ensure it is they who remain on top.
