Newcastle United were said to be preparing to offload Dwight Gayle in the January transfer window.

Dwight Gayle may have saved his Newcastle United with his goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford at the weekend.

Gayle has been overlooked throughout the campaign to date, with Joselu often favoured over the former Crystal Palace man.

And Gayle’s lack of opportunities led to the Daily Star suggesting that Newcastle were looking to cash in on the 27-year-old at the next available opportunity.

Gayle may just have proved why that would be a foolish idea though, with his goal against United.

Gayle was handed a start against the Red Devils, alongside Joselu up-front, and he was a menace during the contest.

The clinical finisher showed his predatory instinct to sharply convert DeAndre Yedlin’s low cross in the opening stages of the match.

Gayle’s strike actually gave Newcastle a lead at Old Trafford, but Rafael Benitez’s side were unable to hold on to claim a shock victory.

The goal may just have saved Gayle’s career at Newcastle, as he is surely in line for a run of games now.

And if Gayle can continue scoring in the coming weeks, any plans Benitez had to sell him in January will surely have to be scrapped.
