Quoted by the club’s official website, Newcastle United new boy Dwight Gayle has admitted that he hasn’t exactly been hitting the right notes since joining the club – but only because of his woeful initiation.
The 25-year-old striker sealed a £10 million switch to Newcastle last week after spending three years at Crystal Palace.
Traditionally, a new player must undergo a lighthearted initiation in front of his new team-mates before he is accepted as one of the group, often through the medium of song.
And the former Peterborough United hitman has revealed that he sang Wonderwall by Oasis, only to be given dog’s abuse by his Newcastle colleagues.
“It wasn’t the best!” he said to the club’s official website. “I was a bit scared to go up there and got booed off but it’s over now, thankfully.
“I was trying to get out of it but the lads wouldn’t give in, so I had to get it over and done with. It’s one of those things you’ve just got to do.
“I was bad but so were all the new lads, so it’s all good fun and a way of breaking the ice for the new players. Now we can concentrate on the football and we are all looking forward to the game on Saturday.”
Gayle, who scored seven times in 14 starts for the Eagles last season, could make his Newcastle debut on Saturday when the Magpies visit Irish club Bohemians.
The striker has previous experience in the Championship after netting 13 times in 28 second-tier starts for Posh during the 2012-13 campaign, but it was not enough to keep United in the division that year.
