Newcastle United host AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, so where are the last Magpies XI to beat the Cherries now – including Dwight Gayle and Nabil Bentaleb?

The Toon last faced the south coast side in July 2020, in what was also just the 14th match yet between the two teams. Newcastle are unbeaten in the last five encounters, and won 4-1 in their last trip to Dean Court following a 2-1 win at St James’ Park in November 2019.

Bournemouth, on the other hand, last beat Newcastle in November 2017 with a 1-0 result on Tyneside. The Cherries will now hope to revert their recent record against the Magpies this Saturday, after sealing a return to the top-flight as 2021/22 Championship runners-up.

Newcastle will host Bournemouth at the weekend level with the managerless Cherries on seven points in 11th and 13th-place. Yet Toon boss Eddie Howe will hope to overcome his former side to seal just the Magpies’ second win of the season, while the Cherries eye #3.

Steve Bruce benefitted through goals from Gayle, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron and on-loan winger Valentino Lazaro to take Newcastle’s last win over Bournemouth. Dan Gosling hit a stoppage-time consolation effort for the Cherries deep in second-half stoppage-time.

Only two of those who scored for Newcastle are still at the Toon now before Bournemouth travel to the North East on Saturday. Four of those who started on the south coast are also no longer with the Magpies. So with that in mind, who opened the encounter in July 2020?

Martin Dubravka (GK): Star of last Newcastle win vs Bournemouth now at Man Utd

Martin Dubravka started in goal the last time Newcastle beat Bournemouth, but now sits on the bench at Old Trafford. Manchester United paid £2m to loan the 33-year-old for one season, in a deal which features a £6m option to make permanent at the end of 2022/23.

The Slovakian had lost first-choice status at St James’ this summer after Howe bought Nick Pope off Burnley for £12m. Dubravka had been the Magpies’ No.1 between the sticks since his initial arrival on loan from Sparta Prague in 2018 with 37 clean sheets over 130 outings.

Emil Krafth (RB): Defender to miss this week’s Bournemouth clash through injury

Bruce signed Emil Krafth from Amiens for £5m in 2019, with the 28-year-old since going on to play 64 games. But the Sweden international has only played twice so far this season for 39 minutes after he suffered a serious knee injury against Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Cup.

Jamaal Lascelles (CB): Captained Newcastle to last win over Bournemouth

Jamaal Lascelles captained Newcastle to the club’s last win over Bournemouth, but he may struggle to now face the south coast side on Saturday. Howe has only fielded the 28-year-old in one Premier League game so far this term, and left an unused substitute four times.

Federico Fernandez (CB): Argentine now at Elche after summer Newcastle farewell

Newcastle let Argentine defender Federico Fernandez leave the Toon for La Liga side Elche on deadline day earlier on in September. The 33-year-old had spent four years on Tyneside for 89 appearances, but only made two since Howe first stood in the dugout in November.

Javier Manquillo (LB): Spanish full-back now waiting for chance to get off the bench

Javier Manquillo started the last time Newcastle beat Bournemouth, but is now waiting for a chance to get off Howe’s bench. The 28-year-old Spaniard has not played a single second in any competition so far this season following five early showings as an unused substitute.

Nabil Bentaleb (CDM): Star of last Newcastle win vs Bournemouth now at Angers

Bruce hired Nabil Bentaleb on loan from Schalke in January 2020, but the Algerian did not prove a hit on Tyneside. The 27-year-old started in eight of his 15 Premier League outings, yet did not make much of an impact in games and now plies his trade in Ligue 1 at Angers.

Jonjo Shelvey (CDM): Newcastle suffered summer blow with midfielder injury

Newcastle suffered a big blow on the eve of the 2022/23 Premier League term with Jonjo Shelvey sustaining a hamstring injury. The midfielder required surgery for the issue and is unlikely to feature before the top-flight hits pause for the Qatar World Cup in November.

Allan Saint-Maximin (RM): Frenchman pulled Bournemouth apart in Newcastle win

Allan Saint-Maximin pulled Bournemouth apart to help Newcastle claim their last win over the Cherries in July 2020. The French winger was superb on the south coast to lay on three assists, having threatened to create chances every time the 25-year-old was given the ball.

Sean Longstaff (CAM): Scored on south coast before suffering an early injury

Saint-Maximin fed Longstaff to double Newcastle’s lead in their last win at Bournemouth. But the Magpies product could only continue on for another three minutes before Almiron came on – and would score – after the 24-year-old developed an injury in the 33rd-minute.

Joelinton (LM): Busy afternoon as Newcastle last beat Bournemouth

Joelinton had a busy afternoon the last time Newcastle beat Bournemouth as Bruce tasked the Brazilian with going from wing to wing and holding the ball up. The 26-year-old is now an integral part of Howe’s central midfield options, despite being signed as a £40m striker.

Dwight Gayle (ST): Star of last Newcastle win vs Bournemouth now at Stoke City

Gayle was the first of three Newcastle players to benefit from Saint-Maximin’s super show as he broke the deadlock at Dean Court in July 2020 from the forward’s pass. The goal was one of the 32-year-old’s 34 over 122 games for the Toon before joining Stoke City this July.
