Dwight Gayle has been integral to Newcastle United’s success in recent weeks.
Gayle has always been a prolific scorer in the Championship, but he has found finding the back of the net much tougher in the top division.
The 28-year-old has scored just five goals in the league this term, and Gayle admits that he wants to get better.
“I haven’t ever had a sensational season in the Premier League so even for myself, I know that I need to perform better and do better,” the £9 million signing from Crystal Palace said.
“But that’s something I need to concentrate on myself, and it just adds to the drive.”
Gayle’s form over recent weeks may just about have saved his Newcastle career too.
There were suggestions that the former Peterborough and Dagenham man could leave in January, and a summer exit also looked a possibility.
However, Gayle has kept Islam Slimani out of the team recently, and played a key role as Newcastle have avoided the drop.
Although the front man has not scored regularly, his energy and desire from the front has been key for Rafael Benitez’s side.
And it now seems very likely that Gayle will be a Newcastle player next season, due to his form in recent times.
