Dwight Gayle has netted 23 goals for Newcastle United so far this season.
Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has admitted to the Shields Gazette that he was having a ‘bad time’ recently, with injury curtailing his progress at St. James’ Park.
Two separate hamstring problems this season, have stopped Gayle from playing as frequently as he was hoping.
Yet the striker still managed to come off the substitutes’ bench to score for Newcastle in their final game of the season against Barnsley.
And he said: “I’ve had some bad times with my hamstrings, and it was probably best for me to just sit it out.
“But obviously I always want to be playing and to miss this last day would have been gutting. “I’ve been doing as much as I can and the physio team have been helping me. I’m glad I got the last 10 minutes of the game.”
Gayle’s goal helped Newcastle seal what turned out to be a majorly important victory over Barnsley.
Newcastle needed to better Brighton & Hove Albion’s result on the final day to take home the Championship title and, thanks to a late Jack Grealish equaliser for Villa against the Seagulls, they did just that.
Gayle ended the season having scored 23 goals for Newcastle, in what was a remarkable first campaign at St. James’ Park.
Gayle is now likely to remain as a key player for Newcastle upon their return to the Premier League next season.
