West Ham United were expected to sign a striker in the January transfer window, but they ended the month without a new goalscorer.
Marko Arnautovic staying despite Chinese interest basically prevented West Ham from splashing the cash, but they did have targets in mind.
One name linked with a move to East London was Atalanta’s exciting striker Duvan Zapata, and it’s no great surprised based on his form.
From the third of December to the 30th of January, the Colombian forward smashed 17 goals in 10 games, becoming one of Serie A’s most feared strikers.
The 27-year-old has been enjoying his best season having joined from Sampdoria last summer, and West Ham allegedly made a ‘large’ January move.
Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio reported that West Ham offered a huge €40million (£35million) for Zapata, but Atalanta rejected the offer in order to keep Zapata at the club.
However, Zapata’s form has declined a little of late, scoring just once in his last six games for Atalanta, whilst registering an assist too.
There’s a train of thought which would suggest that Zapata’s purple patch may have come to an end, and he’s regressing to the mean a little, which was a decent Serie A striker rather than a goalscoring sensation.
That’s certainly something to keep an eye on for the summer, as West Ham won’t want to go back in with a huge offer for a striker who had one incredible patch of form that may never be repeated.
