Rene Meulensteen has told The Daily Record that he is surprised that neither Steven Gerrard’s Rangers nor Neil Lennon’s Celtic have signed Martin Boyle.

The Australia international assistant manager has outlined the attributes of Boyle that would make him a good signing for Rangers or Celtic.

The Dutchman told The Daily Record: “I’m actually surprised that a club like Celtic or Rangers haven’t come in for him because he’s got so much to offer and is doing really well for Hibs right now.

“Martin’s great – he’s full of beans, hard-working, quick, agile and direct. He’s got something special about him, he’s not afraid to run at people and has a heart like a lion.

“Martin has had a few injury setbacks, but personality-wise he never stops smiling. He’s a good guy and a very good player.”

Previous reported interest from Rangers and Celtic

Rangers and Celtic have been linked with Hibernian winger Boyle before, but no move materialised.

The Daily Record reported in August 2020 that both the Gers and the Hoops had watched the winger in action for a few months last season.

The report claimed that Rangers and Celtic would have been interested in securing the services of the 27-year-old on a free transfer, but the former Dundee man signed a new contract with Hibs instead.

The Scottish Sun reported in January 2020 that Lennon wanted to bring Boyle to Celtic Park, having worked with him at Hibs.

Important player for Hibernian

Boyle joined Hibernian on a permanent contract in 2015 after a loan spell at Easter Road from Dundee.

The Australia international has established himself as one of the better wingers in the Scottish Premiership and is a key figure at Hibernian.

According to WhoScored, the 27-year-old has scored three goals and provided three assists in 14 Scottish Premiership games for Hibs so far this season.
