Dutchman could save Daniel Levy from the wrath of Tottenham fans

Is Manchester United’s woeful form saving Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy from himself?

Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United have gone backwards over the past few months, and relinquished the initiative in the race for not only the title, but the top four.

The league is there for the taking this season, but another defeat, this time at home to Southampton. The Red Devils are five points off fourth spot, and have a goal difference of just +7.

United are also unwilling to invest in the transfer market this January, and with a mounting injury list, their prospects this season look bleak.

Their fall away is having potentially big knock on effects for another club. Rather than scrapping for a top four place, Tottenham Hotspur are currently being tipped for a title push.

They are the side in fourth, just two points back off second placed Manchester City.

Spurs still have a glaring deficiency in their squad in terms of a lack of a back up to Harry Kane, but have done nothing to address it this transfer window.

In seasons past, Tottenham have been in promising positions in January, only for the club to fail to invest, and they subsequently fell away in the second half of the season.

Chairman Daniel Levy took the brunt of the criticism from fans for that, and if Harry Kane were to get injured in February, and the club did not sign a striker, there would be calls for him to leave the club.

The only thing which might just save him is the lack of credible challenge from other clubs for the top four positions, specifically Manchester United.

If Louis van Gaal had not got it so horribly wrong at Old Trafford over the last couple of months, Tottenham would be under a lot more pressure to sign a striker.

They may get away with it even if Levy elects not to, and he will have a Dutchman who spurned his invitation to manage at White Hart Lane to thank.
