Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert says Vincent Janssen will have to adapt quickly to succeed at Tottenham

Kluivert has suggested that Janssen will find it very tough to hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Former Netherlands striker Patrick Kluivert has told Goal that new Tottenham Hotspur signing Vincent Janssen will find it difficult to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Janssen joined Spurs in a £17 million from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar earlier this summer as Mauricio Pochettimo looked to bring in quality support for Golden Boot-winner Harry Kane.

The 22-year-old scored 31 goals for AZ last season and has shown promising signs so far in pre-season for Spurs, displaying flashes of the ability which made him such a star in his native country.

However, Kluivert, who scored 13 goals in his only season in England with Newcastle United in 2004-05, is concerned that Janssen could struggle to make the adjustment to life in the Premier League.

He told Goal: “Vincent is a player who came from afar. He’s a young player, a good player. He’s a good striker but it’s a big step to the Premier League and it’s not going to be very easy for him. He’s got to adapt very quickly.

“The Premier League is a tough competition – I know that from my own experience. I wish him all the best. It’s a big club, Tottenham, and he’s going to meet great players – great strikers, great midfielders, great defenders. It’s going to be very difficult for him but, if he stays focused, he can go very far.

“He was in the friendly games that Holland have played this summer and he did a good

job; he gave a good sight of how he can play. I think that, if he plays on a regular basis at a high level, he will adapt more and it helps for him at Tottenham that he can train with high-level players.”

Spurs fans will be hoping that Janssen hits the ground running this term as their side look to improve upon a third-placed finish last term.

Janssen certainly has the firepower and the link-up play in his arsenal, and whether or not he is a success in England depends on him taking to English football like a duck to water.
