Steven Gerrard’s appointment as Rangers boss has generated huge interest in Scottish football and just as much debate.
New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been telling the world’s press that he is “absolutely desperate” to get started at the club when he officially takes charge today.
The Liverpool legend has been one of the stories of the summer so far after landing his first managerial job with the Scottish giants.
The news has been the talk of football since Rangers named Gerrard as their new boss with all and sundry having their say.
Pundits and fans have been intrigued by the potential appointment given Celtic’s SPL dominance and Gerrard’s status as one of the greatest midfield players of his generation.
Many have suggested Rangers will struggle to get close to bitter rivals Celtic despite the appointment of Gerrard.
But Rangers legend Dick Advocaat has reassured Gers fans that Gerrard is the right man for the job and told Sky Sports he will attract top players to help close the gap on Celtic.
“I don’t worry about his experience,” Advocaat told Sky Sports.
“He has so much of it as a player and has always had great managers around him at Liverpool and the national team, so I don’t think that will be a problem, not at all.
“I can only see the positives for Steven and for the players at the club.
“Having Gerrard as manager, having that name involved, will definitely help bring players to Rangers, especially English players.
“The difference when I arrived was that I had to change the whole team almost. But Rangers didn’t do that bad last season. OK they finished third but they were not so many points behind Celtic. With some good players, experienced players, they can close the gap in my opinion.
“I’m certain that Gerrard will bring the competition back between Celtic and Rangers.”
