All of the top leagues around Europe are now taking shape, and there are a few surprises so far on the continent.
Union Berlin are top of the Bundesliga, Sevilla are struggling in Spain, while Sampdoria are rooted to the bottom of Serie A.
Sampdoria’s current plight may well be of interest to Tottenham Hotspur. After all, their potential first-choice midfield pairing is Harry Winks and Ronaldo Vieira, two players who, in another world, could have been playing together in Tottenham’s midfield.
Indeed, Spurs came close to signing Vieira back in 2020, while Winks was a key player for Tottenham around that time too.

Spurs very nearly put Vieira and Winks together, and now they’ve finally been united, but sadly, things aren’t going too well for the pair’s current club.
Sampdoria sit bottom of the league, and it looks as though a relegation battle could be on the cards for both Winks and Vieira.
Of course, we’re yet to actually see the Winks/Vieira pairing for the Italian side, and given that these two could easily have been Spurs’ midfield partnership at one point, one has to hope that once they are up to speed and working in tandem, Sampdoria’s fortunes will be transformed.
It certainly seems as though Spurs had something of a lucky escape in not signing Vieira back in 2020. Their current midfield options are all seemingly much stronger than the former Leeds United man, and it may not be long before the midfielder is playing Serie B football if he and Winks can’t help Sampdoria turn things around.
Spurs fans will certainly have half an eye on Sampdoria to see how Winks gets on this season, but it will also be worth watching Vieira and if he can strike up a decent understanding with Winks.
