Earlier today, it was announced that Dominic Solanke and Harry Wilson had been nominated for the Championship Player of the Season award.

The duo – who left Liverpool in 2019 and 2021 respectively – have shone for Bournemouth and Fulham this season, with both set to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

What’s the story?

Well, Liverpool should feel very proud of their former players.

Wilson has earned his nomination after scoring ten goals in 36 Championship appearances, while also providing 15 assists.

The Wales international’s efforts have helped the Cottagers to the top of the table, ten points clear of Solanke’s Bournemouth on 83 points.

In his case, the ex-Chelsea man – who Jürgen Klopp sold for £19m in January 2019 – has been prolific this season.

Solanke has netted 24 goals in 39 Championship games, putting him second in the scoring charts behind the third and final nominee, Aleksandr Mitrovic.

The Serbian has remarkably scored 38 goals in 38 Championship outings, and in all honesty, the award should go to him as a result.

Should Liverpool have kept Dominic Solanke and Harry Wilson?

As well as the pair are playing, Liverpool were right to offload them when they did.

To receive £19m for Solanke in 2019 was incredible business by Michael Edwards, especially as the Englishman had only scored one goal in 27 games for Liverpool.

Wilson was also struggling for playing time at Anfield, which is no surprise when the likes of Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah are on the flanks.

In that respect, £12m for a fringe player who had only made two first-team appearances for Liverpool was good business, and the Reds were right to let both depart.
