The Premier League has thrown up a few surprises so far this season, and Fulham have been one of the biggest surprise packages of this campaign so far.
The newly-promoted side were largely expected to struggle once again upon their ascension to the top flight, but so far, they’ve been excellent.
The west Londoners are unbeaten after three games of the season, and they continued their great start this weekend with a derby win over Brentford.
Fulham overcame Brentford via a last-minute Aleksandar Mitrovic goal, and this strike may well have caught the eyes of some Newcastle United supporters.
Indeed, not only was their former star Mitrovic finding the back of the net, it was assisted by another former Magpie in the shape of Kevin Mbabu.
The Swiss full-back swung in a gorgeous cross to the back post for Mitrovic to power home with his head, and on another day, these two could’ve combined for two goals.
Mbabu may have only played 15 minutes on Saturday, but he could’ve had two assists, with another back-post Mitrovic header being clawed off the line by David Raya just minutes before the Serbian’s winner.
For a short time Mitrovic and Mbabu were teammates at Newcastle, but they only ever shared the pitch on three occasions for the Tyneside club as numerous managers refused to show any sort of faith in Mbabu during his time at St James’ Park.
However, based on early evidence at Fulham, these two are a match made in heaven with Mbabu’s ability to drive forward and cross perfectly complementing Mitrovic’s unrivalled aerial prowess.
Newcastle may have moved onto bigger and better things since – after all, Kieran Trippier is their first-choice right-back right now, but in the years where they struggled under Steve Bruce, they really could’ve done with a partnership like Mbabu and Mitrovic.
This pair are certainly showing Newcastle what they’ve missed out on now.
