Sunderland midfielder Duncan Watmore believes the Black Cats can get a positive result against Arsenal, despite the vast contrast in the two sides’ league positions, the Chronicle reports.

David Moyes’s side host the Gunners in the lunchtime kick-off tomorrow with Sunderland still looking for their first league win of the campaign, having picked up just the two points from their opening nine league games – which leaves them bottom of the division.

Arsenal, however, are tied at the top of the table in terms of points with Manchester City and Liverpool and can move clear at the top with a win at the Stadium of Light, and they may sense it as an opportunity to strengthen their goal difference given how tight things are at this stage of the season.

Watmore is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “We know we can do a job on Arsenal and we’ve got to try and do that.

“I feel like we’re close and we need a result to kick-start the season, that’s obvious.

“Hopefully it can come on Saturday because the sooner the better.”

Very few people are expecting Sunderland to get anything from this game, so even a point for them could be a boost for morale, and would be a disappointment for the visitors.

Sunderland’s goal threat needs to be improved upon as they can’t keep relying on Jermain Defoe, and while there may have been one or two signs of improvement on the defensive front in recent games, they are still looking for their first clean sheet in the league this season.

It would take a dramatic lift in their performance level to get something from their game against Arsenal – but it’s not impossible over the course of 90 minutes.
