Everton are hunting for a new manager having lost Carlo Ancelotti back to Real Madrid last week – and Duncan Ferguson fancies the job.

A number of names have been touted, from recent Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo to ex-Everton manager David Moyes, now of West Ham United.

The Sun now claim that Everton coach and club hero Duncan Ferguson wants the job, and has even rejected the chance to follow Ancelotti to Real Madrid in order to push for the Everton role.

Ferguson wants a familiar face in Lee Carsley

Ferguson went unbeaten in his brief four-game spell as Everton caretaker boss in 2019, and now seemingly wants a crack full-time.

The report adds that Ferguson has already picked the man he wants as his assistant, as he’s keen to bring Lee Carsley back to Goodison Park.

Ferguson played with Carsley at Everton, but much will now depend on what Farhad Moshiri chooses to do moving forward.

Who is Lee Carsley?

Back in 2002, Carsley joined Everton having impressed as a defensive midfielder with Coventry City.

Many will remember his partnership with Thomas Gravesen in the Everton midfield, and Carsley racked up almost 200 appearances for the Toffees.

Now 47, Carsley has turned to coaching. He spent time with Brentford and Manchester City, mostly focusing on coaching young players.

Currently in charge of England’s Under-20’s, Carsley has a strong record when it comes to working with talented prospects for the future.

A return to Everton would surely appeal to Carsley, especially if it’s to work alongside a former teammate in Ferguson.
