Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has given us an indication of what could happen to Arsenal outcast Lucas Torreira in January.

It has been reported that the Uruguayan could be on his way back to the Emirates as Atletico Madrid reportedly plan to terminate the midfielder’s loan agreement early.

Castles seems to have heard the same thing from his sources, but he’s also heard that he could again be set to go out on loan in the winter.

“We can also tell you that Lucas Torreira looks likely to have his loan deal at Atletico Madrid terminated in January, returning him to the Emirates, but there is also interest from both Torino and Fiorentina, who tried to get a deal done for Torreira last summer,” Castles said.

“But I think Arsenal would be open to get Torreira out on loan again, so hopefully to take down the wage bill and hopefully get an option or obligation to buy from one of those clubs for a player who is clearly not wanted by Arteta.”

Things haven’t gone right for Torreira lately, but maybe this is exactly what he needs.

He was very highly-rated when he was with Sampdoria earlier in his career, so perhaps a return to the slower style of Serie A will suit him, as he’s flourished there before, with his performances in Italy once convincing Arsenal that he is worth £26 million.

Of course, whether or not either of these moves come to fruition remains to be seen, everything is up in the air at Arsenal at the moment, and with the Gunners going through such a poor run of form, we’d be foolish to write of the possibility of Torreira returning to the team, even if Castles says he’s not wanted by Arteta.

This is certainly one to keep an eye on as the story develops over the next few weeks.
