Newcastle have struggled while both of their natural left-backs have been out.
Left-back has been a problem position for Newcastle United so far this season with Javier Manquillo, who is much more suited to playing on the other side of the defence, having frequently been asked to fill in for Rafael Bentez’s side.
Manquillo has found matters considerably tough as he has frequently been caught pushing too far forwards, as was the case in the defeat to Manchester United last weekend, while he has lacked composure in possession.
Thankfully for Newcastle this issue is soon set to be addressed, with both Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara closing in on returns from injury.
Dummett suffered a thigh injury against Tottenham Hotspur in Newcastle’s first Premier League game of the season but should be available very soon.
Haidara, meanwhile, completed 90 minutes for Newcastle’s U23 side against Reading this week and he too is expected to be back imminently having recovered from a knee problem.
Once both players are fully fit it is anticipated that Dummett will establish himself as Newcastle’s first-choice left-back, with Haidara as his deputy and Manquillo as a possible alternative option.
Dummett has an additional incentive to impress as he is looking to earn a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
