Wolverhampton Wanderers should hijack reported talks for free agent Gunnarsson.

Wolverhampton Wanderers look short of options in midfield ahead of their return to the Premier League and could do with bolstering the squad in that key area ahead of next season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side may not need to necessarily splash the cash in every transfer and bargains definitely still exist in the market.

Iceland midfielder Aron Gunnarsson, who has just captained his nation at the World Cup, is exactly the type of figure that would be a brilliant addition at Molineux and that is why they should hijack interest in him.

Gunnarsson, 29, is now technically a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Cardiff City, which is why Wolves should be going all out to try to wrap up a deal for the available enforcer.

Wales Online reports that Gunnarsson is in talks about a new deal with Cardiff following their promotion to the top flight, but he is yet to sign a new contract and as of 1 July he became a free agent.

It is understood Cardiff want to extend the central midfielder’s stay after seven years with them, and the fact he is yet to sign a new deal does not mean an exit is set in stone.

However, Wolves should take encouragement from the fact that Gunnarsson’s future is still up in the air and try to pip Cardiff to his signature, considering he ticks a lot of boxes in terms of what Nuno should be looking for.

He is a combative midfielder that has had a taste of the Premier League before, unlike a number of the Wolves squad, and a potential partnership alongside play-maker Ruben Neves is mouth-watering.

Gunnarsson may not be the big-name signing Wolves fans are craving right now, but they need to fill their squad with reliable players as they prepare for Premier League football once again.
