Some Aston Villa supporters are delighted James Chester has been named the club’s new captain.

James Chester has been appointed the captain of Aston Villa, and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter are delighted he has been given the responsibility.

The 29-year-old defender has been given the armband after the departure of previous skipper John Terry in the summer and he will be hoping to guide his side to promotion.

He has been linked with a £10million move to Stoke City this summer in the Daily Mail, but now looks set to stay where he is after a takeover of the club.

The report adds that Villa are prepared to hand the centre-back a new contract, after rejecting Stoke’s £10million offer.

Chester was a mainstay in the starting XI last season, as his side narrowly missed out on promotion in the play-off final to Fulham.

The Wales international is a no-nonsense defender who is brilliant in the air and a rock in Steve Bruce’s back line.

Chester will now lead his Villa side into the new season and they kick-off with a trip to Hull City on Monday in their opening Championship game.
