Some Newcastle fans have responded to the confirmed exit of defender Chancel Mbemba.

Newcastle United have confirmed that defender Chancel Mbemba has joined FC Porto on a permanent deal – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter are displeased about his exit.

The 23-year-old has completed his switch to the Portuguese giants and ended his three-year stay at St James’ Park in the process.

He is a no-nonsense centre-back that has fallen out of the plans of manager Rafael Benitez and will now continue his development elsewhere.

The Congo international only managed 11 appearances in all competitions last season, being kept on the bench behind defenders Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles for large spells.

The defender was signed during Steve McClaren’s tenure as manager, and despite the season ending in relegation, Mbemba’s debut year on Tyneside was his most fruitful, putting in positive performances despite Newcastle’s precarious position.

Mbemba was a regular in the heart of defence a few years ago, but has been an outcast in the last two years and had just two years remaining on his contract before joining Porto.

A selection of Newcastle fans still believe the young defender is a quality option and that further down the line he could be quite valuable.
